What is Voluma?

Voluma is a hyaluronic acid filler that has been specially formulated to have a thickness and smoothness that is optimal for lifting the cheeks and firming the jaw line. Because the filler is injected into a deeper layer of the dermis than the surface layer, its effect is subtle and you can't feel it or see it.

How Your Cheeks Change As You Age

As you grow older, your cheeks lose volume. This loss of fullness can make your cheeks look sunken, and can create hollows and dark circles beneath your eyes. Before Voluma was added to the line of Juvederm fillers, there were not a lot of options for rejuvenating the cheeks. The limited options included non HA fillers that have higher risks such as Sculptra, Radiesse and Artefil (all products that are not natural to the human body and have much higher complication rates than Juvederm products) and cheek implants, which are difficult to individualize. Cheek implants are pre-formed, so their shape cannot be molded like Voluma.

Losing volume in your cheeks can be one of the early signs of aging. You may start to see a general lack of facial fullness starting in your 30s, or possibly in your mid to late 20s. As your cheeks descend, your chin may lose definition, deep lines may extend from your nose to the corners of your mouth, and the contour of your jaw may lose its sharpness.

Restore your Youth with Juvederm Voluma

Like other nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, treatment with Voluma is minimally invasive. The facial filler is injected into various areas of your cheeks to lift skin and restore fullness. These injections should not be painful. Voluma is combined with lidocaine, an anesthetic that will numb the injection site. Voluma is a hyaluronic acid filler that has been specially formulated to have a thickness and smoothness that is optimal for lifting the cheeks and firming the jaw line. What Are Cheek Fillers?

Our cheeks are prone to volume loss, just as everywhere else on our bodies. The culprit? Declining collagen production. It’s an oddity, but our collagen production peaks at the age of 20 and declines by one additional percentage point every year after that. Do the math — by the age of 50 your skin has 30 percent less collagen under it. Since collagen provides the structural framework under our skin that keeps it firm and taut (tenets of young skin), this decrease allows the formation of lines and creases and for areas such as the cheeks to flatten and sink. Throw in the natural weakening of underlying muscle and support tissue, and you’re left with flattened cheeks that have little resemblance to the plumper cheeks of our youth.

Dermal fillers such as Juvéderm Voluma replace that lost volume. When Voluma is injected into the areas that have lost volume, the hyaluronic acid instantly binds with nearby water molecules. This plumps and firms the area, returning volume and making the cheeks look noticeably younger.

What Dermal Fillers Are Used For Cheek Augmentation?

There are two fillers that are used for returning volume to the cheeks: Juvéderm Voluma and Restylane Lyft. Dr. Lee feels Voluma is the better option for our patients.

What Are The Benefits Of Cheek Fillers For Volume Loss In The Cheeks?

Plump, full cheeks are the hallmarks of a more youthful face. If you look at pictures of, say, your parents and compare photos from their 20s to their late 40s and early 50s, you’ll notice a dramatic change in their cheeks. They look much flatter and even sunken. When we inject Voluma into this area, it returns the volume that has been lost and this rejuvenates the cheeks, and it does so without any incisions or downtime.

How Long Before I Will See My Results With Voluma?

As with each of the Juvéderm and Restylane hyaluronic acid fillers we provide at Bryn Mawr Facial Aesthetics, Voluma delivers instant results. As soon as we inject the Voluma gel into your sunken cheeks the hyaluronic acid immediately binds with nearby water molecules and this instantly adds volume, plumping and firming the skin in the area.

How Long Will The Results From Voluma Last?

Juvéderm Voluma is the longest-lasting hyaluronic acid. It adds volume to your cheeks for up to two full years.

What Are The Side Effects With Juvéderm Voluma?

The most common side effects include tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, slight pain, redness, and mild itching at the injection sites. Because it is formulated for the cheek area, Juvéderm Voluma is somewhat thicker so these side effects, although rare, are moderately uncomfortable and may last two weeks and sometimes longer.

Because Voluma is made with hyaluronic acid, if you don’t like your results, Dr. Lee and our other certified injectors can inject an enzyme, hyaluronidase, and this instantly neutralizes the hyaluronic acid and dissolves the filler.

Will I Have Any Downtime After My Cheek Filler Injections?

There isn’t any downtime after your Juvéderm Voluma injections at Bryn Mawr Facial Aesthetics. As soon as you leave our offices on County Line Road you can go right back to work or your other normal activities.

Will My Face Look Natural After Having Voluma Injected?

Our cheeks do not involve the same movements as say the area around our mouth or on our upper face. When we inject Voluma, it simply returns volume to the area. This replaces the collagen that has been lost due to natural aging, sun damage, and other causes. Because of this, your newly plumped cheeks don’t look artificial; they look younger. That’s because plumper cheeks are one of the hallmarks of youth.

Can I Combine Cheek Filler Injections With Other Procedures?

Our Juvéderm Voluma injections can be combined with most of our other non-surgical treatments at Bryn Mawr. Any of the injectables we use at Bryn Mawr can easily be combined with cheek augmentation. For instance, if you wanted to erase your crow’s feet or the 11s between your eyebrows, Botox or Dysport injections could be added to your Voluma session. You could also target your smile lines, marionette lines, parentheses lines, and other areas around your mouth with the other Juvéderm and Restylane fillers we offer. All of these injectables can be used in tandem in a single appointment without any interactions.

You could also combine cheek augmentation with a CoolSculpting session, laser hair removal, or even Kybella injections under the chin to reduce your double chin.

If you’re interested in combining treatments in a single appointment, let’s talk about what you’re interested in and what works well with Voluma injections.
