Restylane Versus Juvederm

By Posted on behalf of John J.W. Lee, MD, FACS

Both Restylane and Juvederm are popular gel-based facial fillers made from hyaluronic acid, which is a very safe, naturally occurring substance in your body. And Dr. Lee is a diamond  injector – among the top 2 percent in the country – of both Restylane and Juvederm.

So which is right for you? It’s a choice that Dr. Lee can help you make depending on your aesthetic goals.

Restylane

Restylane is more appropriate for fine sculpting because it holds its shape better and does not swell like Juvederm. Restylane is a harder product that Juvederm and is better for fine sculpting.Dr. Lee uses Restylane often to improve the appearance of the tear trough or lower eyelid areas that can start to look sunken and tired. Filler injections for lower lids should only be performed by highly experienced injectors since lower eyelids skin is very thin and any imperfection is very noticeable. This area is one of the most difficult injection site and can result in lumpiness and puffiness that will worsen the appearance of the lower lids.

Juvederm

Juvederm can be used to create more fullness because it swells up under the skin. It is most suitable for areas that need overall volume such as the nasal labial folds(the parenthesis area near the nose and mouth), the lips and cheeks of patients. Juvederm is the most popular filler due to it’s longevity and also softness.

Benefits of Non-permanent Fillers

If you are not pleased with your results, Restylane and Juvederm materials are easily erased or softened. This is a much better alternative than injecting permanent products, like calcium-based substances such as Scupltra or Radiesse, that require surgery to remove. Your body is ever changing and is no place to experiment with permanent injections. Adverse reactions to any foreign product injected to your body can occur. The ability to dissolve and remove the product is something that Dr. Lee’s feels is crucial to patient safety. That is why he prefers hyaluronic acid based products.
