Introduction to NeoGraft
Hair loss is an inevitable part of aging for many men and women, but it can occur much earlier in life for some people. There have been revolutionary advancements in hair restoration techniques and technologies to combat this reality, the newest of which is the NeoGraft system. Neograft has become one of the most popular treatments for hair restoration due to its consistent effectiveness and minimal invasiveness. At Lux Skin Lasers by John Lee, MD, located just west of Philadelphia, a team of renowned hair restoration experts, led by Dr. Joseph Castelli, offers NeoGraft to patients in the greater Philadelphia area, including the Main Line, to effectively restore hair fullness and one’s self-esteem and confidence.
What is NeoGraft?
The NeoGraft system is a minimally invasive hair transplant procedure that uses automated technology to harvest and implant existing hair follicles into balding or thinning areas of the scalp. Rather than removing a strip of the scalp like other hair transplants, NeoGraft utilizes Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which allows individual hair follicles to be extracted directly from the donor area (usually the back of the head) without the need for a noticeable incision and permanent scars at the donor site.
NeoGraft uses a unique handheld pneumatic device that provides a more efficient extraction process that is less traumatic to the scalp. Using the suction feature, our highly trained Neograft technicians strategically and meticulously extract single hair follicles and prep and implant them into the area where additional hair is desired to create a natural yet fuller hairline.
One of the main advantages of the NeoGraft system is the ability to produce minimal scarring and discomfort with a quicker return to normal activities. Additionally, the results can be customized by placing the individual follicles at various angles and densities to mimic your hair’s natural growth pattern.
What Are the Benefits of NeoGraft?
While the most significant benefit of the NeoGraft treatment is its ability to restore the fullness of your hair, our Philadelphia, Main Line, and Bryn Mawr patients have mentioned experiencing the following benefits:
- Minimally invasive, performed in a comfortable office setting
- The procedure involves minimal discomfort
- Scarless
- Quick recovery: most people return to work and normal activities within a week
- Hair grows in a natural pattern.
- Permanent results with a 95% success rate for viable hair follicles implanted
- Customized results for both men and women
Who Are the Best Candidates For NeoGraft?
If you are in the greater Philadelphia area and are interested in the NeoGraft hair restoration procedure, we have found the best candidates for the treatment are patients with the following characteristics:
- Are in good health
- Non-smoker (or can temporarily quit before and after the procedure)
- Have moderate to severe hair loss
- Possess enough donor hair on the back of their scalp
- Maintain realistic goals and expectations
The following candidates are NOT ideal candidates for the Neograft hair transplant procedure:
- Have health conditions that affect wound healing
- Have bleeding conditions, inflammatory conditions, or certain heart conditions.
- Prone to keloid or hypertrophic scarring
What’s the First Step?
If you are in Bryn Mawr, on the Main Line, or in the greater Philadelphia area, the first step in getting a NeoGraft treatment is to come in for an initial consultation with Dr. Castelli. During this appointment, Dr. Castelli will examine your scalp to assess your balding/thinning areas and potential donor location, ask questions regarding your medical history and lifestyle, and discuss your hair restoration options, including NeoGraft. This is also the perfect time to ask any questions you may have and address any concerns.
If Dr. Lee feels you are suitable for the NeoGraft treatment after his assessment, he will create your procedure plan. Our patient coordinator can use this plan to help you schedule your treatment and provide a total cost breakdown.
What to Expect on the Day of NeoGraft Surgery
On the day of your NeoGraft procedure in Philadelphia, it’s essential to arrive with clean and dry hair. Your donor site will be shaved, and the area will be sterilized. A local anesthetic will be administered to numb your scalp and minimize the discomfort you may experience during the procedure. Throughout the process, Dr. Castelli and his team will communicate with you, making sure you’re comfortable and aware of each stage and taking breaks when necessary.
You will need to lie on your stomach for a long period of time while our expert Neograft technician carefully extracts individual hair follicles using the NeoGraft pneumatic device. This device minimizes trauma to the scalp and hair follicles. Then, the healthiest follicles are sorted to ensure the best viable growth in the recipient area. The extraction process usually takes 2-7 hours, depending on the number of grafts desired.
After the extraction, the harvested follicles are implanted while meticulously observing the hair placement angle, density, and pattern to achieve natural-looking results. Depending on the number of hair follicles transplanted, this phase of the procedure may also take 2-4 hours.
NeoGraft Recovery
Once the procedure is completed and you are released from our care, we will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions. These instructions are fundamental to follow to maximize your results and promote proper healing. Since NeoGraft is an outpatient procedure, you will be able to go home and rest the same day. We strongly recommend having a family member or friend available to drive you home, as you may still feel the effects of anesthesia.
In the first few days after your procedure, you can expect to experience some swelling, redness, or mild discomfort in the donor and recipient areas. These symptoms can typically be managed with prescribed pain medication and should gradually subside within a few days. You must avoid strenuous activities and direct sun exposure during the first week. Most patients can return to normal daily activities within a few days, but you will still want to avoid intense workouts or activities that may strain the scalp for at least two weeks.
Patients will notice new hair growth as the weeks progress, with full results typically visible within 6-12 months. You will need regular follow-ups with Dr. Lee and his team to monitor your progress and address any concerns during recovery.

FAQs About Hydrafacial
- Is NeoGraft Painful?
Most of our Philadelphia and Bryn Mawr patients find NeoGraft to be painless, as it is a minimally invasive hair transplant procedure performed under local anesthesia. That being said, patients have expressed that there can be some levels of manageable discomfort. After your procedure, you might experience mild soreness or swelling, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
- How Many Appointments Will I Need?
The number of appointments will vary depending on your particular goals and the extent of your treatment. On average, you can expect to come in for your consultation and procedure (with some patients requiring an additional procedure date), followed by a follow-up appointment or two so Dr. Lee can monitor your progress.
- How Long Until I See Results?
While every patient will have varying results from their NeoGraft hair transplant, you can typically expect to see initial hair growth three to four months after your procedure. Full results usually take about 9 to 12 months as the transplanted hair finishes its growth cycle, but factors such as your hair type and overall health can influence the timeline. Dr. Lee may have you return for regular follow-ups so we can help track your progress.

Yes, you can! Many of our Bryn Mawr and Philadelphia NeoGraft patients will combine their procedure with other rejuvenation treatments, both surgical and non-surgical. Whether you are looking for something more long-lasting, such as a mini-facelift or brow lift for a more youthful appearance, or BOTOX and facial fillers to reduce wrinkles and improve facial volume, Dr. Lee and our talented team of skincare experts will be happy to help you achieve your desired aesthetics.
