Chemical Peels and Medical Skincare in Philadelphia

Chemical Peels ~ The Safer Alternative to Lasers

Why it is Done

Chemical peels improve the appearance of pigment changes in the skin, acne scars, mild sun damage, or fine wrinkles in all skin types. They can be done on the face and on other parts of the body. A superficial peel may also be used to prepare the skin for a deeper peel. Our line of Skinceutical peels (#1 medical grade skincare line in the world) will help to reduce and minimize the appearance of sun damage and signs of aging. Repeated peels are needed to produce the effect the person wants.

Price for our medical grade chemical peels range from $150 to $195. We offer medium depth peels such as 10% TCA peels which are used to treat mild to moderate wrinkles, long-term sun damage, overall even skin texture and tighter skin appearance. The TCA peel can be very effective in evening out pigment differences and in reducing fine wrinkles and signs of sun damage. Repeated treatments may be needed after 3 to 6 months to produce the best effect. Chemical peels are sometimes done with dermabrasion or laser resurfacing for a more dramatic overall effect. Price for 25-30% TCA peel (performed by Dr. Lee): $450 (this is an amazing price; most medical offices charge $1200-$1500 for this procedure, especially if performed by a facial plastic surgeon)

How Well It Works

The results of a chemical peel depend in part on the depth of the peel. In a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to the skin and allowed to penetrate. Over the next 3-7 days, depending on how deeply the chemical penetrated the skin, the skin peels off. This procedure destroys parts of the skin in a controlled way so that new skin can grow in its place. The chemicals used are sometimes called exfoliating or wounding agents.

  • Superficial peels are the mildest type of chemical peel and can be used on all skin types. Superficial peels usually use liquid containing a mild (dilute) acid, most often glycolic, salicylic and retinoic acids. *we use Skinceutical line of peels due to it's consistent performance; the cost is higher to our practice but the results are consistent and also safe for ALL skin types
  • Medium to deeper peels penetrate the skin more deeply than superficial peels and cause a second-degree burn to the skin. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is the main peeling agent used for medium to deep peels. Also known to some as the "Blue Peel" made famous by Obagi. The "Blue Peel" is basically a TCA peel with blue food dye.

Before The Peel

Our medical staff can help you decide what depth of peel and what type of chemical solution is most appropriate, based on your skin type, which areas you want peeled, what kind of results you want, how much risk you are willing to take, and other issues. A small "test spot" may be peeled to get a better idea of the results, especially for people who have darker skin. For optimal results, preparing your skin by daily use of topical medicine such as medical grade retinol or Retin-A products or Skinceuticals line of  brightening products which contains lightening agents to suppress melanin production and stimulation, is recommended 2-6 weeks prior to performing the peel (longer time for deeper peels). Applying these medical skin care products will help the skin peel more evenly, speed healing after the peel, and may reduce the chance of infection and other complications, especially uneven color changes in the skin.

Dermapen uses multiple needles that vertically pierce the skin. This enhances rejuvenation results and is far safer for the client because there is much less epidermal damage. The automatic vibrating function of the Dermapen increases the effectiveness of treatment by increasing absorption of products, while reducing pain and discomfort. Dermapen is just as effective as ablative treatments such as Fraxel, IPL, Laser Resurfacing, and Chemical Peels. The most amazing benefit is that Dermapen's pricing is a fraction of the leading alternatives.

Dermapen: How It Works

The Dermapen fractional dermal-needling provides unparalleled response via a fractional delivery of needles creating micro-injuries into the epidermis and dermis. These micro-injuries to the skin encourage and harness the power of the body’s innate ability to repair the skin through the normal physiology of skin. The first phase begins with the release of the bodies growth factors and the further cascade of new epidermal growth, fibroblast chemotaxis, fibroblast proliferation and matrix production. This proliferation of the body’s tissue continues to release growth factors from fibroblasts, keratinocytes and monocytes. The second phase of wound healing involves deposition of collagen III, IV and I, elastin, proteoglycans, and GAGs. The last phase results in tissue remodeling where the skins vascular matrix matures and skin tightening. The body’s ability to heal itself is at the heart of this amazing process.
