With the economy slowly rebounding, more people are choosing to spend money on their appearance. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has witnessed the effect of the rising economy throughout the industry. Both non-surgical cosmetic treatments and traditional cosmetic surgery procedures were on the rise in 2012.

The largest jump (5%) came in facial rejuvenation treatments, such as BOTOX® and facial fillers. The decreased cost of many of these treatments, along with minimal risk and recovery time, has made them a growing trend in plastic surgery. However, surgical procedures are still on the rise as well. There has been a 6% increase in facelifts, a 4% increase in eyelid surgery, and a steady interest in rhinoplasty.

As cosmetic procedures continue to become more affordable, effective, and safe, people have changed their perception of plastic surgery overall. Many current trends in plastic surgery can be explained by the fact that people are beginning to see cosmetic enhancement as more accessible – less of a privilege for the wealthy, and more of a modern advancement that everyday people can benefit from.
