5 Questions to Ask Before Asian Eyelid Surgery
An “Asian” eyelid refers to a crease-less upper eyelid, most people from Asian backgrounds have eyelids like this and so the corrective procedure is Double Eyelid Surgery or Asian Blepharoplasty. It is used to create a natural looking double eyelid crease. Most patients that undertake this surgery are in their twenties and thirties. In fact, it is the most popular cosmetic procedure in Asia and the third most popular in the US. Other than Asians, people with lax skin around their eyebrows due to old age also get this procedure.
Questions to ask
Here are 5 questions you need to ask before getting an Asian Eyelid Surgery:
- What exactly is Asian Eyelid Surgery? – Asian Eyelid surgery is a procedure that involves removing small amounts of fat and excessive skin from your eyelid through a small incision that is placed on your carefully created crease. The surgery is performed under the influence of an anesthetic or I.V sedation.
- What is the cost of the surgery? – The cost of the surgery depends on various factors like the country you are in, the clinic you choose, whether the surgery is performed using a local anesthetic or I.V sedation etc. Typically, the surgery costs around $2500 – $5000.
- What precautions do I take before the surgery? – Patients are not supposed to smoke or consume alcohol in the weeks before the surgery. It is also important for you to clarify any doubts that you have with your surgeon. Be sure to tell your surgeon about any previous eye problems or infections and other diseases like hypertension and thyroid disease as they will increase the risk of complications during the procedure.
- What can be expected after the surgery? – Typically, most patients will heal 2 weeks after the procedure but the healing process depends on a variety of factors like the amount of icing, rest and head elevating the patient does, how much bleeding there was during the surgery and the individual’s healing speed.
- What are the risk factors involved? – Like most surgeries, a blepharoplasty can lead to scarring and sometimes, infections. If too much skin is removed then the patient will have trouble closing their eyes. Dry eye syndrome might develop but this can be solved using artificial tears. Most of the risks involved can be minimized with proper post surgery care.
