How Painful Is Laser Hair Removal?

By Posted on behalf of John J.W. Lee, MD, FACS

Unwanted body hair can not only be a nuisance but can affect your self-image and confidence. There are many ways to remove unwanted and stubborn body hair at home. These at-home methods can be very effective, from shaving to waxes and depilatory creams and gels. However, they are also quite temporary and, in some cases, can cause skin irritations and discomfort.

For a potentially more permanent solution, laser light energy has been determined to be very effective at permanently removing unwanted body hair. Although every patient is different in how their hair follicles will respond, the GentleMAX process used by Dr. John Lee has performed very well in clinical trials toward FDA-certification.

Along with being very effective, laser hair removal treatments also take very little time. Depending on the location and area to be treated, most sessions last around 15 minutes and require very little preparation and no medication or internal anesthetic.

During the procedure, Dr. Lee glides the handheld unit over the skin, allowing the laser energy to cause the hair follicles to stop growing. Some patients report some discomfort during the treatment. Though very rarely does this rise to extreme discomfort or pain. Depending on the area treated, Dr. Lee will use a topical numbing cream to help with the discomfort.

In most cases, the sensation is often described by patients as the feeling of repeated snapping against the skin. Certain body areas are more sensitive to laser light, and this feeling may be more pronounced. Adequate hydration and being able to relax and not tense during the treatments will also help alleviate some of the discomfort.
