Botox: your Facelift Alternative

By Posted on behalf of John J.W. Lee, MD, FACS

A full face lift surgery can deliver dramatic and effective results. There are alternative less invasive options for people who do not want the “pulled” or unnatural appearance that is sometimes associated with a face lift. With Botox, you can put off the need for a face lift while still experiencing a refreshed and more smooth appearance. Botox treatments can decrease facial creases and fine wrinkles while creating a softer and more refined look. Dr. Lee knows that the best approach to enhance your look is the most natural one. Consider the following questions to see if Botox is right for you.

How do Botox injections work?

A Botox procedure involves a fine pointed needle that is used to inject Botox into specified muscles. Botox will block the signals from nerves that tell the muscles when to contract. The result is a more full and smooth appearance. A Botox procedure takes only a few minutes and can be accomplished during your lunch break.

What wrinkles can Botox reduce?

Botox is commonly used on crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. It cannot diminish wrinkles caused by cigarette smoking, sun damage or gravity because these facial creases are not caused by contractions. Botox treatments are also used to refine the lines around the lips, mouth, chin, and neck.

How long do Botox injections last?

After your first Botox injection, you will see the subtle reappearance of wrinkles around the third to fourth month. You will require regular Botox injections to train the muscles to relax. With each injection, the time frame between each procedure will extend, and you will not require treatments as often.

What are the side effects?

Bruising is the most common side effect of Botox injections, but it is a completely normal and an expected part of the healing process. Headaches and eye drooping may also occur, but they are rare and temporary.
